Positioned on a 740m2 site in Kew, the original property lacked function, with the land falling 5.5m over its length. The vision was to rearrange the spaces to better cater for a young family, while connecting each space to the outside world.

To facilitate this, we removed an old rear extension and replaced it with a new family room, which embraces the sloping land and reaches up to the rear raised garden. Aptly named ‘the claw’ by its owners, this clever design solution provides solar protection to the north, while also allowing the winter sun to reach indoors.

The claw is surrounded on 3 sides with full height glazing, further extending the living environment into the rear landscaped yard.

The house was featured on the television series Better Homes and Gardens, as well as on the Architectural and Australian Design Review websites.
